When to install green roof
When is the best time to install a green roof?
You can basically choose to install or have your green roof installed throughout the year. However, there are some periods that are more suitable than others to green or ”seed” your roof. For example, it is best to lay your green roof in the spring or just in the fall. We’ll explain why below.

What is the best time to install a green roof?
Both spring and fall are a good choice for sedum plant development because these are the best seasons for plant growth due to the presence of moisture on the one hand and temperature on the other.
Please note; with proper policies, a green roof can be perfectly fine in summer but also in winter. A green roof specialist will therefore advise you on watering and any other issues when constructing the green roof in summer and on the other hand promoting the growth of the green roof in winter.

Building a green roof in the spring
Of course, as you already expected, spring is the very best time to install your green roof. And this is for the following reasons:
- In spring, sunshine hours increase again. Sunshine hours = growth!
- The green roof is well rooted during the spring period when you installed it in the previous year. So nutrients can be absorbed well by the strong roots.
- Nature does a good job of helping keep your roof moist during the initial period when it still needs a little more water.
Building a green roof in the summer
When we talk about summer, it is precisely the watering of the green roof that is incredibly important after it is installed. At all costs, drying out should be prevented. Daily watering of the green roof is very important the moment the green roof is installed in summer to ensure that the roots can take root.
It is nice to get to work on a roof in the summer in terms of climate, you do not suffer from damp roofs and the temperature to work is often pleasant.
Tip in the summer with installing a green roof: it can get very hot in the summer causing the Bitumen (the roofing material) to melt. If you then walk on the roof then the chance of leakage increases. So be careful.

Planting green roof in the fall
When you plant your green roof in the fall it has very nice advantages for the root growth of the sedum. This is because autumn is ideally suited for root growth.
Tip: Be sure to always keep your roof free of leaves in the fall to avoid trouble, just as you do on a lawn. The sedum, when leaves are on the grass, can suffocate and the leaves deprive sedum of light.
Building a green roof in winter
If you are considering having a green roof installed in the winter, it is very important to take into account the fact that it is not possible to work on the construction of a green roof in the event of frost. This is because the sedum cannot be removed from the ground when it freezes.
When the thaw has set in, the green roof can be installed just fine during the winter period.
As you can imagine, the growth and sprouting of the sedum will also take a little longer during the winter period.
