The municipality spends the subsidies mainly to prevent water nuisance in the future. This is called water storage.

The municipality in Rotterdam wants to encourage the installation of as much green on the roof as possible, so a special subsidy scheme has been devised for up to 1,500 euros.

The City of Rotterdam offers subsidies for green roofs to better capture rainwater and reduce flooding.
