A lot of green roofs have already been laid in Leiden, the municipality has been giving out subsidies for years for people who want to install a green roof. Every year the municipality’s subsidy pot goes very quickly. It is therefore advisable to apply for your subsidy well in advance, so that you do not miss out on the green roof subsidy.

What can you expect from the municipality of Leiden in terms of green roof subsidies? For 2022, the municipality of Leiden has set the following allowances:
- Do you have a roof area of up to 20 square meters on which you would like to have a green roof installed? Then you will receive 20 euros per square meter as compensation.
- If you have a roof area that is between 20 and 50 square meters you can count on a fee of 15 euros per square meter
- Does your roof area exceed 50 square meters? Then you will be reimbursed up to 12 euros per square meter.
The maximum amount reimbursed by the municipality is a total of 10,000 euros per living space that is independent. Once the green roof is installed, the subsidy is only paid out.
Municipality lead grant green roof: what are the rules of the game?
The municipality of Leiden has come up with some ground rules that apply to be entitled to a subsidy for your green roof. Of course, specialist Gert-Jan will help you with the subsidy application to ensure that you meet all the conditions set by the municipality of Leiden.
Below we have listed the terms and conditions for you, so there are no surprises:
- If you want to qualify for the green roof subsidy, your roof area must be at least 15 square meters.
- If the grant is awarded, you will be responsible for ensuring that the green roof remains in place for at least five years
- See if you need a permit to install the green roof. If you need a permit, you need to make sure that it is in order by the time the green roof can be installed.
- Careful execution is mandatory, so is maintenance
- Only when the grant is approved may the green roof be constructed
- Once the grant is approved, the plan is to install the green roof within six months thereafter
- Do you live in a rental property? Then the agreement, in writing, is required from the landlord of the property
- Are you already entitled to another subsidy for the construction of the green roof? Then the grant for the green roof cannot be applied for because it is then a double grant.

It depends a bit on what kind of green roof we are talking about. A green roof that is really meant to be a roof garden, in most cases you can walk on that just fine. Grass, trees and shrubs are not uncommon on a roof like this.
When we talk about a sedum roof, it is best not to walk on it. Of course, in some cases it may be necessary for maintenance. However, otherwise it is a good idea to leave the sedum alone.
A green roof can basically be installed throughout the year. Whether it is summer, autumn, winter or spring. Only when it is freezing can the sedum not be removed from the ground and therefore delivery is not possible. Otherwise, you can install a green roof at any time of the year.
The weight of a green roof varies enormously. This has first of all to do with whether you choose an extensive or an intensive green roof. This is because the substrate layer is as much as 15 centimeters in some while in others the substrate is only 5 centimeters deep. That makes quite a difference in terms of weight.
In addition, the green roof becomes much heavier the moment it is full of moisture, such as when it has been raining. When it is dry for an extended period of time then the green roof again loses a lot of weight.
