Biobased Green Roof
With the Biobased approach, we deliver our Sedum-, Sedum-herbs– and Roof Flower Meadow-roofs also in a natural version, with the same planting but biobased layers of cork, jute, hemp and sheep’s wool.
Requesting a quoteWhy choose Biobased Green Roof
Natural materials, insulation and water buffering in one sustainable and circular roof solution.
Sustainable & Circular
The Biobased Green Roof is constructed entirely of natural materials such as cork, jute, hemp and sheep’s wool. No plastic modules, but reusable layers that contribute to a circular future.
Insulating & Water Buffering
The cork layer provides natural insulation as well as drainage. This keeps the indoor climate stable and allows rainwater to be temporarily stored and delayed.
Biodivers & Vibrant
Choosing sedum, herbs or flowers creates a green roof full of life. It attracts bees, butterflies and birds and enhances biodiversity in the environment.
The biobased green roof system
This system consists entirely of natural and circular materials such as cork, jute, hemp, sheep’s wool and recycled granules. Together, the layers form a sustainable, insulating and water-storing green roof that contributes to biodiversity and a healthy living environment.
- Vegetation layer: Sedum, Sedum Herbs or Roof Flower Meadow
- Substrate layer: Natural mix of granules in hemp bales
- Drainage layer: expanded cork sheet with water buffering effect
- Protective layer: jute and sheep’s wool, optionally with root resistant film
Technical data
Water buffering: ≈ 17 L/m²
System thickness: 3-10 cm
Weight (saturated): ≈ 33 kg/m²
Extra (insulation layer of cork): thickness 3 cm, λ ≈ 0.040 W/(m-K) (dry measurement)
The bio-based green roof is suitable for vegetation layers such as sedum, sedum herb roof and roof flower meadow and is constructed from natural materials such as cork, jute, hemp and sheep’s wool.
Construction Biobased Green Roof

A properly constructed biobased green roof will last for years and requires little maintenance. The use of natural and circular materials creates a sustainable system that provides insulation, water buffering and roof protection.

More about the biobased green roof
Completely natural and circular
The Biobased version of our Sedum, Sedum herb and Roof Flower Meadow roofs is constructed from 100% natural materials such as cork, jute, hemp, sheep’s wool and recycled granules. No plastic modules, but individual layers that together form a sustainable and circular green roof.
Insulating and water-holding
The expanded cork board acts as a natural insulation and drainage layer. Above it is a substrate of granulated hemp bales that temporarily stores and delays rainwater. This creates a solid, water-holding base that contributes to a stable indoor climate.
Biodiversity and low maintenance
The vegetation layer consists of sedum, sedum herbs or a roof flower meadow with native species. These plantings attract bees, butterflies and birds and enhance biodiversity. The plants are grown without fertilizers or pesticides and require only limited maintenance: remove weeds twice a year and water extra during dry periods.
Frequently asked questions about Biobased Green Roofs
Yes, the Biobased Green Roof is suitable for most flat and slightly sloped roofs. Depending on the carrying capacity of the roof, we recommend the appropriate variant(Sedum, Sedum Herbs or Flower Meadow).
Maintenance is minimal: weed removal twice a year and extra watering during prolonged drought.
The roof consists entirely of natural materials such as cork, jute, hemp, sheep’s wool and recycled granules.
Yes, subsidies are available for green and sustainable roofs in many municipalities. We are happy to help with the application.
With proper maintenance, a Biobased Green Roof will last an average of 25 to 40 years, comparable to traditional systems.
