What is a green roof?
A green roof is a roof overgrown with plants. Sedum is often used for this purpose, but herbs, grasses or flowering plants are also possible. This gives the roof an additional, living layer on top of the existing roofing.
Besides looking attractive, a green roof has a clear function. It acts as natural insulation, retains rainwater and increases biodiversity in the environment. It also makes the roof structure last longer because the plant layer protects the roofing from sunlight and temperature changes.
When can you install a green roof?
In principle, a green roof can be installed almost all year round. The important thing is that the weather conditions are favorable: no frost, snow or extreme heat. The best periods are spring and fall, as the plants can attach and grow quickly then.
For flat roofs and slight slopes, installation is usually straightforward. Sloped roofs require special systems that ensure that the planting remains securely in place. Thus, there is a suitable solution for almost every roof.

On average, prices are between €85 and €175 perm2 for a fully serviced green roof. Thanks to subsidies, this amount can be considerably lower.
Green roof Grants and schemes
More and more municipalities are encouraging the construction of a green roof because it helps against flooding, heat stress and loss of biodiversity. That is why there are attractive subsidy schemes. Depending on the municipality, compensation can be as much as €25 â €35 perm2, sometimes even more for special projects such as retention roofs or combinations with solar panels.

Maintenance of a green roof

With biodiversity and flower roofs, this sometimes involves additional maintenance, such as mowing in the fall or light irrigation during dry periods.
